Your Last 72 Hours

On the news, every channel: a giant meteor is heading for Earth and it’ll wipe out all life across the whole planet.

That’s it – game over.

You have 72 hours left to live. How will you spend it?

This is a great question for finding out what’s really important to you.

Here’s how I answered…

My first thought was that I’d smash my brains into another dimension by taking as many drugs as I possibly could. If I died by overdosing, never mind.

Bear in mind I’m a drug addict in active recovery, currently with almost 2 months clean. Every day there’s a voice inside me which tries to tempt me to take drugs again. So it’s no surprise that this voice leapt at the chance to use a world-ending meteor as a great excuse to get as wasted as possible.

But as I thought about my hypothetical final days a bit more, I changed my mind…

With those last 72 hours, I’d want to spend as much time as possible with the people I love, my closest friends and family.

We wouldn’t freak out about dying, we’d just spend quality time together. No TV, no mobile phones, no social media. We’d just sit around and chat, maybe play a board game or two.

And then I thought… in real life, I could get hit by a bus crossing the road tomorrow. The Stoics used the phrase Memento Mori to remind themselves every day that tomorrow could be their last.

So, what would I change about my life at the moment in order to make it a bit more like how I’d spend those final 72 hours?

Interesting question, huh!

What about you? How would YOU spend your final 72 hours? There’s no right or wrong answer, everyone’s different.
