Just some quotes and phrases I’ve been finding useful to say to myself recently… (Big thanks to SL for inspiring this post!)
“I don’t have to believe everything I think (or feel).“
Sometimes my brain spits out random thoughts or feelings. I don’t have to accept them as valid, true or useful. If I’m feeling sad, that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a genuine reason for the sadness which requires me to go into problem-solving mode and overthink it.
“This too shall pass.“
No matter how bad I’m feeling right now, eventually the feeling will go away on its own. I can accept my emotions and allow them to be – there’s no need to resist or challenge them.
“No matter how bad things get, I can deal with it.“
This is a useful reminder that I’ve been through some tough times… and survived. That means I can do so again in the future. I’m tougher than I think.
“I am worthy of love and belonging.“
I can’t get a feeling of love and acceptance (self-esteem and self-worth) from anything or anyone outside of myself. It has to come from within.
“Do the right thing.“
In most cases, I already know what the right thing is. I should act in alignment with my personal values. I don’t want to give in to the temptation to do what’s fun or easy instead of what’s truly important.
“Treat ‘Future Me’ as if they are a real person that I’m responsible for helping.“
This is one of Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules and it helps me develop a sense of self-worth. When I act in a way which values myself in the future, it’s proving to myself that I’m worthy of love, acceptance and belonging.
